Kid's train Kids love train sets, but a train you can actually get into is hard to come by. Shirl shows how it's done.
Shirl's train is made from timber decking boards, axles and a paint tin.
STEP BY STEP 1 Cut 16mm ply to size for the base, front sides, roof and back (see diagram for measurements) 2 Then drill a hole in the front of base for the rope 3 Use the spade bit to drill starter holes in the front of the cabin before cutting the windows 4 Now cut around the "tongue" section on the front of the base, and cut sections out of the sides of the cabin 5 Run a router around any sections that splinter, including the cabin windows 6 To make a buffer, screw wooden knobs to the front of the train. 7 Now screw the front panel (complete with buffers) to the base 8 Attach the 20 litre paint tin to the front as the boiler by screwing in a couple of 45mm square pine rails to the tin and base 9 To make the train more realistic, screw in a decorative knob to the tin to make a smoke stack. Now use the cut down plastic bottle as a light by screwing it to the front of the boiler, and make a safety valve out of an old kitchen cabinet handle. 10 Now the front panel of the cabin is in place, screw in the sides 11 Screw in the roof of the cabin 12 Screw in the axles and wheels under the main cabin. Note: because the axles and wheels are fitted, you can't steer it, so you have to rely on the rope and a "big person" to pull you around the yard 13 To complete your train, paint it with your choice of colour and design.

Materials 16mm ply (or could use MDF) 2 pieces of 45mm pine to support boiler and axles 2 axles, 600mm long, includes 4 x 100mm angle brackets 4 wheels (100mm diameter) 2 Split pins to attach wheels to axles 1 x 20-litre paint tin Plastic bottle Old door knob Rope Paint
